Coronation of King Charles III - "Afternoon Tea" - May 6th 2023

Judging by the many thankyous received, members and guests thoroughly enjoyed our Coronation Afternoon Tea, at L’Orangeraie. On the big day, our event began at 4:30pm giving people a chance to watch the coronation and parades on TV.

Much of the content of our “Afternoon Tea” event, I had kept secret. The fantastic singer, Vasmo Tz, the spinach quiche, copied from the original Buckingham Palace recipe, Chris Parkman, St John’s new chaplain, singing “Jerusalem,” accompanied by Arabella’s Childrens choir, who did so well with only one or two rehearsals and our Menton Coronation placard, designed by our webmaster, John O’Hare.

Of course, I had mentioned the occasion would be reported on TV3 news “Journal Tele,” I had asked the ladies to wear hats and the ladies responded positively and looked lovely. How nice to see everyone looking so elegant.  As I mentioned on the day, “Tres Anglaise.” It’s very British for a lady to wear a hat to a formal occasion. Thankyou ladies!

Representatives of the mayors of Menton and RCM, normally raise a glass with us and thereafter disappear. On this occasion, they stayed and enjoyed a happy afternoon with the journalist from Nice Matin, who gave us a lovely write up. The TV crew headed off, in order to get their clip ready for the 7pm news. Their report on Menton’s Afternoon Tea was very complimentary.

Thinking all eventualities had been covered, including instructions given on how to make dainty afternoon tea sandwiches. “Please remove the crusts, add the fillings and cut into triangles.” I didn’t see the size of those triangles, until they were being served……! The quiche was lovely, the desserts truly dainty and a good time was had by all.

A LOVELY ARTICLE IN NICE-MATIN

Queen’s birthday celebration hosted at the British Embassy by British Ambassador Lord Edward Llewellyn of Steep and his wife Lady Anne

Paris, 13. June

Celebrations began in great British style, with the band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland marching down the rue du Faubourg St Honoré, which had been closed to traffic. No mean achievement for the UK government, considering the imminent looming of Brexit. “Entante cordiale” of M Macron’s government remains healthy. At least for the time being.

Guests were treated to a rendition of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” performed by the “Tower Theatre Group” The first time in history that Juliet appeared on the balcony of the ambassador’s residence in Paris.

Champagne and cocktails flowed including British ales, cider, whisky and, of course, fine wines.

The Ambassador gave an entertaining laid back speech, introducing his wife Anne and their three children.

Later, in the English garden of the Embassy, guests had the  manifold choice of food,  BBQ, Indian, British pies by Wrights, English cheeses from Neals Yard, and ice cream from the “New Forest”.

The band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland played to rousing applause, before guests were treated to appearances on the specially created stage by French chanson singer Clara Luciani, followed by the UK’s Jamie Cullum, introducing his new album “Taller.”

Needless to say, a great time was had by all and I was delighted to have been invited. BN

A Royal Reception!

A cocktail reception was held May 8th 2018 at Villa Massena, Promenade des Anglais, Nice, hosted by the Mayor of Nice, M Christian Estrossi, in honour of the visit of HRH Prince Charles and HRH the Duchess of Cornwall.

Although the heavens had opened that morning, casting doubts on whether the Royal visit could take place as arranged, in the gardens of the Villa Massena, miraculously, the sun shone brightly at 4pm highlighting both the colour and scent of the garden’s roses and easing the anxiety of the organisers.

As part of the 500 invited guests, some of us were given the honour of having been selected to personally meet HRH Prince Charles and HRH the Duchess of Cornwall.

During his visit, HRH Prince Charles, paid homage to the victims of the 2016 attack, placing a wreath of white flowers at the memorial situated in the Villa’s gardens.

Speeches in French and English were made by HRH and the Mayor of Nice, M Christian Estrossi, accompanied by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall and our Ambassador to France, Lord Llewellyn of Steep.

After the formalities ended, the band  played one or two rousing British tunes. Champagne flowed, much to everyone’s delight, accompanied by delicious canapés and a great time was had by all.
