Since 1957, we have helped British citizens and others in the Menton area who may have encountered unexpected problems such as illness, accidents, bereavement or financial difficulties.  We offer care in the community to many older residents.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make you feel part of our international community. With more than 150 enrolled members, you’re sure to find like-minded people, with whom to exchange ideas.

We offer help in various ways, sometimes by just sitting down with a troubled person and listening. Remember, a problem is a solution waiting to be solved.  We keep an eye on our elderly members, especially those who live alone and are in regular contact by phone, email and house calls.  In cases of illness, we make hospital visits, assist with language problems and inform family/relatives.

We can help provide transport for the elderly to social events, give practical advice and regularly organise a variety of events.  We believe that by offering our members a social life and thus constantly being in touch, we have created a happy and content membership community.

Our motto is “bringing people together” and with a members age range from early forties to late nineties, we’re kept busy.

We work together with other associations on the Cote d’Azur, such as the Riviera Business Club and the International Club, enabling us to offer our members the possibility of attending prestigious events, such as the Monaco Yacht Show, the Historic Grand Prix and the Business Person of the Year Award, at greatly reduced prices.

We are a voluntary association and our mission in Menton, is to enroll more volunteers, enlarge our committee and to continue to expand our membership base, which today ranges from Menton to Liguria in Italy and to Monaco and beyond.

A Brief History

Founded by Rev Hearsey, Holy Trinity Church, Nice, the association’s initial aim was to offer assistance to British people in need, to look after the interests of its members, their friends and families and to organise social events, with the aim of “bringing people together.” The annual social highlight was and still is a party to commemorate HM’s official birthday in June.

Branches of the original British Association, Nice, were formed in Cannes, the Var, Menton and Monaco. The British Association acts as a link to the Consulate in Marseille.

Today, each former branch is an independent association in its own right, under French law, the 1901 act. Although the initial objectives remain, Menton has opened its arms and moved forward to welcome the 21st century. As I mentioned earlier, we in Menton are proud of our international status with members from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, the US, South Africa, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, France and the UK. When first arriving to “live the dream” in this beautiful part of the world, you may encounter unforeseen problems. You can’t speak the language, don’t understand the bureaucracy. You might need an English-speaking GP or dentist. Maybe it would be help to know of an English-speaking plumber or painter?

Our aim is to answer your queries, to make you welcome. To introduce you to like-minded people and help you to settle in France. We also organise lots of  interesting social events, lunches, quiz afternoons, cocktail evenings, and much more.
