BA Menton - Sanremo Trip

NEW DATE 12. SEPTEMBER 2024

THIS IS DUE TO MEMBERS RETURNING TO MENTON AFTER 10. SEPTEMBER AND WILL THEREFORE NOT BE A JOINT VENTURE WITH THE AMERICAN CLUB !

WE MEET AT THE HOTEL 10:30am

ITINERARY

11 am We visit the Russian Orthodox church. Designed by the famous Russian architect, Alekseij Sucev. The extensive exterior work, has now been completed and once again, the chuch glitters from afar, due to the colourful interweaving of the five bulb domes and spire. The church was inaugurated in 1913. During this time, many hundreds of Russian aristocrats wintered in Sanremo. The outbreak of the Great War, in particular the fall of the Tsarist regime, prevented the completion of the church’s interior.

12:15 We walk to La Pigna.

14:00 Time for a light lunch of your choice, before returning to the hotel.

19:30 Casino di Sanremo inaugurated in January 1905 Initially known as the Kursaal. This is a magnificant Art Noveau building, but cannot be compared with Monaco. It has more than 400 slot machines at ground level. For the gameing rooms, follow the red carpet. There are various bars in the casino.

You will need to show identification, if you wish to play. I don’t believe the dress code here is as strict as in Monaco, but gents, please don’t try to enter in shorts!

I plan to book a table at the casino’s roof top restaurant for dinner at 20H and am awaiting menu details.

The next morning, Helena Forsen will be your guide to the Villa Nobel.

Constructed in 1871 for the pharmacist Pietro Vacchieri, it was bought by Alfred Nobel in 1891 The upper two floors contain much original furniture and fittings, including an insight into Nobel’s private life. The basement museum displays all Nobel prize winners, with English translations including Nobel’s work in 19th century technological development.

ENTRY: 5€ per person. You will need to spend more than an hour here.

A light lunch will be taken at a nearby restaurant afterwards.

FOR THOSE OF YOU STAYING ONE NIGHT, THE TOUR WILL NOW BE OVER. FOR THOSE STAYING TWO NIGHTS, WE HAVE THE OPTION TO VISIT THE SANTA TECLA

Fortress, with dinner in the port. Some of you may prefer taking a look at the many shops in Sanremo?

HOTEL VILLA MARIA SANREMO

An hotel with character, initially three art deco villas, retaining many original features.

French Lessons (09:30) + Tea & Coffee Morning (10:30) @ Le Louvre

Le Louvre Function Room
Wednesday Mornings 09:30 to 12:00

FRENCH LESSON STARTS: 09:30

TEA & COFFEE MORNING STARTS: 10:30

We have finally received an official mail from the mairie, concerning security arrangements at the LOUVRE. Until now, we only had word from the concierge, resulting in locked doors one Wednesday and open doors another, which has been confusing to say the least.

It now appears that operation “VIGIPIRATE”will be enforced by the government until after the Paris Olympics.

Entrance and exit  will again be through  the emergency exit door to your left, as you enter. If at all possible, it would be helpful for members to arrive at in time for 10:30 am, so that we can avoid having to open up every few minutes. The same applies to members taking French lessons. Please be there on time.

Please also note that tas the Louvre is run by the Mairie it is closed on Bank Holidays.

Many thanks.
