Armistice day 11 November2023, Menton

Many thanks to members of the British Association de Menton, who turned up in large numbers to take part in the Armistice Day commemoration ceremony. You are great and it’s wonderful to experience such community spirit of togetherness.

After the ceremony, some of us continued on to the Tennis Club for lunch. It was an incredibly warm day for November, with blue skies and sunshine. A perfect afternoon to spend among friends.

Apero's @ L.A. Yoguteria, Menton

Friday, 27th October
A warm sunny day with a blue sky and lovely sunset, it became quite windy later in the afternoon, but nothing deters our stalwart members, who arrived in large numbers for a jolly get together, although canopies and sun umbrellas had to be taken down.

BA October 2023 lunch at Palais des princes

In the historic center of the old town, lies this restaurant, which serves Mentonnaise specialties.
First built in the 15th century by John I Grimaldi, the former palace of the princes of Monaco, was transformed in 17th century, by prince Honore II, who’s plaque adorns the exterior wall. With its long and turbulent history, the palace became Menton’s town hall during the revolution. It has now been transformed to apartments and the restaurant is on the ground floor.
25 members enjoyed a meal with a difference and a group went on a guided tour before the meal.

Apero's @ L.A. Yoguteria, Menton

September 29 2023

A big crowd of more than 35 members and guests attended the small, but perfectly formed Yoguteria, for yesterday’s Apéro. Every space outdoors was crammed and every seat in the the place occupied, but the best thing was the mix of different nationalities, all forming part of the British Association de Menton.

We welcomed members from the US, Sweden, Switzerland, Holland, Latvia and  Ireland, apart from our UK members, many of whom have returned, after the long hot summer…and you know what ? We all get on. Everyone mixes and we all have a good time.

BA September 2023 Trip - Cannes and Saint Honorat

On a sunny day in September, our group individually made their way to Cannes by train. Our hotel was conveniently situated to both the train station, Le Suquet and the port.

At 6:30pm we assembled at reception. Our quest was to find a bar able to accommodate a group without prior notice. This was achieved, with much re-arranging of tables and chairs and the serious business of taking our order and provision of wine glasses, by the excitable, but friendly and competent owner.

A short walk, took us to our restaurant in Le Suquet, where a lovely table awaited us. Service was excellent, food good and enjoyed by all. It didn’t take long for our members to start dancing and other guests joined in the fun. As a matter of fact, our restaurant must have been the hottest place on the Le Suquet strip that night.

After an excellent breakfast on the rooftop of our hotel, we made our way to the port, boarding the navette to St Honorat.

It took about twenty minutes, with enough time for a coffee, before meeting our charming sommelier in the vineyard, on yet another magical sunny morning. My only little niggle, only two wines were offered, although accompanied by some delicious nibbles. ( I did mention this to the organisers in an email after the trip.)

After a very substantial picnic lunch, we set off to meet the Abbott. It is, as you will realise, unusual for the Abbott of a monastery, to take a group, acting as tour guide. My thanks to Olivier Motte, for arranging this on our behalf.

If memory serves me correctly, Father Vladimir, spent two hours with us. Showing us not only the existing Abbey, but also the second monastery, which had fallen into great disrepair many centuries ago and is currently being renovated at great cost. Donations are needed to continue this work, which involves experienced craftsmen, intent on recreating an authentic past. Tax incentives are available. It will be open to the public next year and I’m sure we shall return.

We left the island at 4:30pm. Some members took the train back to Menton that evening. The “hard core” ended up at the Irish pub in Cannes, to celebrate the day with Guinness. After all, hadn’t St Patrick studied on the island in times gone by!

FONTANA ROSA - Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Katherine Mansfield

WEDNESDAY 13. SEPTEMBER, The British Association de Menton celebrated the centenary of Katherine Mansfield and the 50th anniversary of the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship, with readings from “The Dolls House” and ”The Young Girl,” including extracts from KM’s letters to J.M. Murry

We were delighted to welcome SUE WOOTTON, poet, novelist and short story writer. Fellowship winner 2020, who due to covid was unable to take up her fellowship until now. Sue has been feted by the Mairie de Menton and various events have been taking place in Sue’s honour, under the guidance of David Rousseau, director of Art and History, Mairie de Menton, who was present at our event.

2008 Fellow, DAMIEN WILKINS, Novelist, director of Modern Letters at Victoria University, Wellington, engaged the audience with his humorous talk and five British Association Menton members, all experienced readers, re-enacted stories and letters.

Wine, soft drinks and a splendid cold buffet, rounded off a lovely afternoon for all.
